In a stunning move being celebrated by anti-mercury activists, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added a respected mercury-free dentist to its Dental Products advisory panel. Facing unprecedented calls to abolish mercury fillings—including a lawsuit by Moms Against Mercury—the FDA has sought the expert input of Dr. Michael Fleming DDS. Dr. Fleming is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), and will serve for three and one-half years as Consumer Representative on the panel. He will be responsible for representing consumer concerns before the Panel for any and all products used in dentistry.

Dr. Fleming's appointment has been confirmed in time for him to participate in the upcoming FDA hearings on the neurotoxicity of mercury-containing dental amalgams, to be held September 6 and 7 in a Washington DC suburb. The FDA has told Dr. Fleming that this meeting promises to be one of the most significant and highly charged hearings of its type to be held in over ten years.

As an advocate of mercury-free dentistry, Dr. Fleming may well be the sole dissenter in the midst of a group of dentists loyal to the American Dental Association (ADA), who were appointed to hold the line on mercury fillings. At long last, perhaps these ADA dentists will realize it's in the best interest of the dental profession—and their patients—to abolish mercury fillings immediately.

What you can do:

  1. Write Dr. Mike Fleming with your ideas and support: mikeF@nc.rr.com
